A geológiai kutatások azonban rámutattak, hogy amazonit nem található a folyam közvetlen közelében, viszont elég gyakran előfordul Dél-Amerikában. Ezen kívül még nagy mennyiségben Oroszországban, Brazíliában, Ausztráliában és Madagaszkáron is bányásszák.
A másik történet szerint a név az ókori amazonoktól ered, akik bátorsághozó kőként pajzsuk díszeként viselték ezt a zöld követ. Érdekes, hogy a kristályokkal behatóan foglalkozók szerint viselésekor elsősorban a női és férfi energiák egyensúlyba hozása várható, amely az amazonokra is jellemző volt, hiszen nő létükre férfias életmódot éltek.
